Protek Devices has been at 32 N, Jinnah Park, Gulberg II since 2000, and more of our work is in Lahore than anywhere else. The Coca-Cola office on a Gulberg main road took 3M Prestige 70 across its curtain wall: spectrally selective film that turns back solar heat while staying clear at 69% light, so nothing about the building changed to look at.

The rest of the city looks much the same. A diagrid glass dome at Pentasquare, filmed from outside because that is the only way to treat overhead glazing. Offices at LumenSoft and MyBagPack in DHA. A federal government building. Farmhouses and family homes where the afternoon sun comes straight through the living-room glass.

What we did

We ran 3M Prestige 70 across the curtain wall. The film is spectrally selective: it turns back solar heat and stays clear at 69% light, so nothing about the building's look changed.

The result

The lounges kept their daylight and their view of the road. What went was the heat, and a good chunk of the afternoon cooling bill.

Central Punjab

What Lahore's climate asks of the glass.

Long hot summers into the mid-forties, a monsoon that arrives in July, and winters that bring fog and smog rather than real cold. Glass here does the hardest work in May and June, then spends December behind a grey sky.

What we specify here

The balanced middle of the range: enough rejection for a Punjabi June without darkening rooms that will want every scrap of light in a foggy January. Spectrally-selective and ceramic films suit this better than reflective ones, which look their worst under a flat winter sky.

Do you charge for a survey in Lahore?

No. We are based in Gulberg II, so a survey anywhere in the city costs you nothing. A specialist measures the glass, checks its type and orientation, and confirms the film before quoting.

Will film make rooms dark in winter?

It can, if the wrong one is chosen. Central Punjab spends December under fog and a flat grey sky, and a dark reflective film that felt clever in June is miserable in January. We usually specify spectrally-selective or ceramic film here, which rejects heat while holding on to visible light.

When is the best time to have film fitted?

Any time, though spring is ideal because the adhesive cures fastest in mild dry weather and the film is in place before the worst of the summer. Monsoon installs are fine; the glass simply takes a little longer to clear.
