Two windows in the same blast.

These two panes faced the same live charge in the same shot, a few feet apart in the same test structure, during a 1998 programme of explosive tests on commercial glazing. The recorded results could not be further apart, which is the whole argument for specifying the build rather than just buying film. Six live shots, an independent test house at a military range, unfilmed control windows in the same structure.

The glass shatters and goes opaque, then holds. Recorded as film retained intact in the frame with no openings, no glass inside the structure, and about 20% of the inner lite still bonded to the film.

The blast is survivable. The glass often isn't.

Blast overpressure arrives faster than anyone can react, and ordinary glazing responds by leaving the frame as hundreds of high-velocity fragments. Study after study of urban explosions reaches the same conclusion: flying and falling glass causes most of the injuries, often far outside the immediate blast zone.

Blast mitigation film attacks exactly that mechanism. A thick, tear-resistant membrane bonds the pane into a single held sheet. Add an anchoring system and the sheet stays attached to the frame under pressure. The window fails, but it fails safely.

In short

Blast mitigation film is thick, multi-layer safety film tested to blast standards. It cannot stop an explosion, but it holds the shattered glass together and, with frame anchoring, in the opening, so the pane never becomes a wall of flying shards.

Is blast mitigation film the same as bomb-proof glass?

No, and any supplier claiming film makes glass bomb-proof is overselling. Blast mitigation film does not stop an explosion or make a window unbreakable. It holds the shattered glass bonded to a tear-resistant membrane so the pane does not become a spray of high-velocity fragments, which are the leading cause of injury in a blast.

Which standards should blast mitigation film be tested to?

Ask for grades tested to ASTM F1642, GSA TS01-2003 and ISO 16933, the recognised blast standards for glazing. 3M's Ultra range and the thick multi-layer safety grades we install carry this testing. A specification sheet should name the standard, not just say blast-resistant.

What is a film anchoring system and when is it needed?

An anchoring or attachment system bonds the filmed pane to the window frame, so under blast pressure the whole held-together sheet stays in the opening instead of falling inward in one piece. It is specified for higher threat levels, large panes and glazing close to occupied desks. The site survey determines whether film alone or film plus anchoring is appropriate.

Can blast film be fitted to an occupied building?

Yes. Blast mitigation film is a retrofit product applied to the existing glass, floor by floor, with no construction, no glazing replacement and no need to vacate. That is why it is the standard hardening measure for occupied embassies, banks and offices.

Who typically specifies blast mitigation film in Pakistan?

Embassies and consulates, international NGOs, banks, federal government offices and corporate head offices. It is also sensible for buildings that simply sit near a sensitive address, since blast pressure does not respect boundary walls. Protek Devices has installed these films since 2000.
