Choosing the right film

What is the difference between safety film and heat-control film?

They solve different problems. Safety (anti-shatter) film is a tough layer that holds broken glass together on impact, for protection against break-ins, accidents and blasts. Heat-control (solar) film rejects the sun's infrared heat, glare and UV to keep rooms cooler and cut cooling bills.

One protects people from the glass; the other protects people from the sun. Some films do both. See below.

Can safety and heat-control film be combined on the same glass?

Yes. Certain films are engineered to do both jobs: they hold shattered glass together and reject solar heat and UV. Where a single film can't reach the level you need for both, the right combination is specified on a site survey so you get full safety performance and the heat rejection you want without over-spending.

Safety & security film

What are the benefits of safety film?

Safety film bonds to the glass so that, when it breaks, the fragments are held in place instead of flying into the room. That reduces injury from accidents, slows down forced entry by holding the pane in its frame, and helps contain flying glass in the event of a blast or storm. Clear grades deliver this protection while staying virtually invisible.

What types of safety film are there?

Safety films are grouped mainly by thickness and construction. Thinner clear films (around 100 microns) cover everyday anti-shatter and accidental-impact protection; thicker multi-layer films (up to ~350 microns) step up to anti-intrusion and blast-resistant performance. There are also combined safety-plus-solar films that add heat and UV rejection.

The correct grade depends on the risk you're protecting against, the glass size and the frame, confirmed on a survey.

Heat, UV & light

What types of heat-control film are there?

Broadly three. Clear / spectrally-selective films reject heat while staying near-invisible, so you keep the daylight and the view. Tinted films add a neutral shade and cut glare more strongly. Reflective (often called "mercury" or mirror) films reflect the most solar energy and add daytime privacy on the facade.

Each trades a little light or appearance for more heat rejection, the right one depends on your orientation, how much glare you get and the look you want.

Does heat-control film block UV rays?

Yes, high-performance solar films reject up to 99% of ultraviolet light. UV is the main cause of fading in floors, furniture, fabrics and artwork, and is also harmful to skin, so blocking it protects both your interior and the people near the glass.

Does window film block infrared (IR)?

Yes. Infrared is the part of sunlight you feel as heat, and it is what solar film targets most. Top spectrally-selective films reject up to 97% of infrared, which is why a treated room feels markedly cooler near the glass even when the film looks clear.

How much visible light do films block (VLT)?

Visible Light Transfer (VLT) is the percentage of daylight a film lets through. A higher VLT means a brighter, clearer room. Near-clear solar films keep around 60–70% VLT, so they cut heat without darkening the space, while tinted and reflective films have lower VLT for more glare control and privacy. You choose the balance of light versus shade that suits each room.

What are the advantages of clear (transparent) heat film?

A clear, spectrally-selective film rejects heat, glare and UV while keeping the glass looking untreated. You keep your daylight, your view and the building's appearance, ideal where you don't want a visibly tinted or mirrored look, such as homes, showrooms and feature glazing.

What are the advantages of tinted and reflective ("mercury") film?

Tinted films add a neutral shade that cuts glare hard, good for west-facing rooms, screens and very bright elevations. Reflective / mercury films reflect the most solar energy of all, giving the strongest heat rejection plus daytime privacy because the outside sees a mirror. The trade-off is a darker interior and a visible exterior finish, and reflective privacy reverses at night when interior lights are on.

What are the benefits of externally-applied film?

Externally-applied films are fitted to the outside face of the glass. Their key advantage is on heat-sensitive glazing: Low-E and double-glazed units, where they stop solar heat before it loads into the sealed unit, reducing the risk of thermal stress. They're also useful where the inside face is hard to reach. The trade-off is a shorter life than interior film because they face the weather directly, which is reflected in the warranty.

Glass types & application

How do heat-control films perform on double-glazed and Low-E glass?

They work well, but these units need care. Double-glazed and Low-E glass already absorb and trap heat, so adding the wrong film can raise thermal stress and risk cracking. We assess the glass make-up, edge condition and orientation, and typically specify an externally-applied solar film so heat is rejected before it loads into the sealed unit.

The performance gain is real; the specification is just chosen to suit the glazing safely.

Can film be applied to Low-E glass, and what thickness, 8mm, 12mm?

Yes, film can be applied to Low-E glass and to thick panes such as 8mm and 12mm, as well as toughened and laminated units. Glass thickness itself is rarely the limiting factor; what matters is the make-up (single or double glazed, coated, tinted) and how much heat the unit already absorbs.

Because Low-E and double-glazed units are heat-sensitive, we confirm the exact glass build and recommend a compatible film on a survey before fitting.

On double glazing, is inside or outside application better?

For ordinary single glazing, interior film is the norm; it's protected from the weather and lasts longest. For sealed double-glazed and Low-E units, an externally-applied film is usually preferred because it rejects solar heat before it enters the cavity, lowering thermal-stress risk. Interior film can over-heat a sensitive sealed unit.

The exact choice and the performance each way are confirmed on a survey, once we've seen the glass.

How is window film better than buying Low-E glass?

They do different things. Low-E glass is chosen mainly to reduce heat loss (insulation); solar-control film is chosen mainly to reject incoming solar heat, glare and UV. Film's big advantage is that it can be added to your existing glass, including Low-E units, without replacing windows, so you get strong heat rejection far more cheaply and quickly than re-glazing, and with no construction. The two can also complement each other.

Savings, comfort & performance

How much can I save on electricity bills in offices and homes?

Cooling is one of the largest parts of a summer bill, and a big share of that load comes straight through sun-facing glass. By cutting solar heat gain, film reduces how hard and how long the air-conditioning has to run, which lowers energy use.

The actual saving depends on how much glass you have, its orientation, your AC and how you use the space, so we give a realistic estimate for your building rather than a single headline number. Savings are greatest on large east and west-facing glazing.

How many degrees cooler will it make the room?

The biggest, most immediate change is comfort: hot spots near the glass disappear and the fierce radiant heat you feel sitting by a window is cut sharply. In an air-conditioned room the air temperature was already being controlled, so the visible change there is that the AC holds the setpoint more easily; in an unconditioned or partly-conditioned room the air-temperature drop is larger and more obvious.

Because it varies with glass area, orientation and film, we don't quote a fixed figure, we set realistic expectations for your space on the survey.

How much better will my air-conditioning perform?

With less heat entering through the glass, the air-conditioning reaches the target temperature faster and cycles less to hold it, especially during the afternoon peak. That means more even comfort across the room and less strain on the equipment, rather than a bigger or colder unit being needed.

How do I reduce fading of floors, furniture and artwork?

Fading is driven mainly by ultraviolet light, with heat and visible light contributing. Solar films reject up to 99% of UV along with much of the infrared heat, which significantly slows fading of flooring, furniture, fabrics, merchandise and artwork. No film stops fading completely, but it is one of the most effective and affordable ways to protect valuable interiors.

Skylights, sunrooms & winter

How do I solve solar heat gain from a skylight?

Skylights face the sky directly, so they take the most intense solar load of any glazing. A solar-control film on the skylight rejects that infrared heat and glare while still letting daylight through, so you keep the bright, open feel without the space turning into a greenhouse. Because skylight glass is often laminated, toughened or sealed, we confirm the make-up and specify a compatible film on a survey.

Can clear heat-control film fix an overheating sunroom?

Yes, this is one of the clearest wins for film. A sunroom is glazed on every side, so it overheats fast in summer. A clear, spectrally-selective film rejects the heat and glare while keeping the glass looking untreated, so you keep the light and the view that the sunroom was built for, and the space becomes usable through the hottest part of the day.

Will window film still let in light and warmth in winter?

Clear and spectrally-selective films keep most of the visible daylight, so a sunny room stays bright in winter and still benefits from the sun's warmth through the glass, the film mainly cuts the intense summer infrared and glare, not your winter daylight.

If reducing winter heat loss is the goal, that's an insulation (low-emissivity) function rather than solar control; low-E films exist and can help modestly. We'll match the film to whether your priority is summer heat rejection, winter warmth, or both.

Lifespan & care

How long does window film last?

A professionally-installed quality film typically lasts 10–15 years or more on interior glass, and 3M architectural films carry a manufacturer warranty covering both the film and the application. Externally-applied films have a shorter life because they face the weather, which the warranty reflects.
