Tinted glass has colour built in when the pane is manufactured. Window film is a thin layer applied to glass you already own. Body tinted glass works mainly by absorbing solar energy, and an absorbing pane gets hot, then releases a good share of that heat into the room anyway. Modern film rejects more of it, goes onto existing windows in a day, and can be removed later. Replacing glazing costs many times more than filming it.
Two buildings on the same road can look identical through a car window. One has tinted glass, the other has film on ordinary glass. The difference is when the decision was made, what it cost, and how much heat is actually being kept out.
Two products, one appearance
- Body tinted glass. Colourant is added while the glass is being made, so the tint runs all the way through the pane. Green, bronze, grey and blue are the usual shades.
- Reflective coated glass. A metallic coating applied during manufacture, giving the mirrored look on many office towers.
- Window film. Polyester with a scratch resistant coating and an adhesive, applied to glass that is already in the building.
Absorbing heat is not the same as rejecting it
This is the part that surprises people. Body tinted glass darkens the view and soaks up solar energy, but that energy does not disappear. The pane heats up, and a hot pane radiates in both directions. A meaningful share of what it absorbed still ends up in your room.
It is why a bronze tinted office window can be too hot to rest your hand on by three in the afternoon while the room behind it is still being cooled hard. The glass is doing something. It is just not doing enough.
A spectrally selective film targets the infrared part of sunlight and reflects more of it away, so less energy is held in the glass at all. That is how a film which looks close to clear can out-reject a distinctly coloured piece of tinted glass. The cost is not close
Replacing glazing means new units, possibly new frames and beads, access equipment for anything above the ground floor, and an opening in your building while the work happens. Filming uses the glass you already paid for. A house is usually finished in a day and an office can be done floor by floor with rooms back in use the same evening.
There is also the question of changing your mind. A film you dislike can be taken off. A tinted glazing unit is permanent. Our cost guide sets out the per square foot rates for film.
Can you put film on glass that is already tinted?
Usually yes, and it is often the sensible upgrade for a building stuck with mediocre tinted glazing. There is one real caution. Tinted glass already absorbs heat, and adding an absorbing film to the inside face raises the temperature the pane runs at, which raises the risk of thermal stress cracking.
The answer is not to avoid film. It is to specify the right one. A reflective film, or a film applied to the outside face, keeps the pane cooler. This is exactly what a survey settles, and the same reasoning governs double glazed and Low-E glass.
Film does not win every time. Replace the units if they are failing, misted or leaking. Film cannot deliver acoustic performance, and it cannot give you the insulation of a modern double glazed unit in a cold room. If you are still at design stage, high performance glazing specified from the outset is cleaner than filming it later. We will tell you so on a survey rather than sell you film you do not need.
